Heritage Series 05 – John Hultquist

There is in Hultquist the force of a life lived ‘outside’ of expectations. What could it have meant to have been born ‘outside of wedlock’? Would there have been discrimination, stigma? Did this early experience of being an ‘outsider’ shape who Hultquist would later become as a Swedish immigrant to New Zealand and then in Australia? In what ways? And what of the staggering 43 Corps appointments in almost 35 years of Officership with The Salvation Army? Would this constant movement not ensure that Hultquist always remained the ‘outsider within’, someone marked by both a distance from and proximity to societal norms?- (Malcolm N Irwin, Centre for Leadership Development, Booth College of Mission)
